As you may recall, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle resigned from their full-time positions as working royals in January 2020. As many freelancers do, they have since dabbled in a few areas. Podcast this, race car that, as one does. On Monday night, Harry added one more temp gig to his resume: Stand-up comedian.
The Duke of Sussex made a video appearance at the 17th annual Stand Up For Heroes Benefit, an event whose proceeds support veterans, active duty service members, and their families. The event was held at New York City’s Lincoln Center, and was presented by the New York Comedy Festival and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
Harry, who served in the military for a decade, wore his four medals for service on his suit jacket in his video address, in which he poked fun at himself and said that with his appearance he was “representing gingers,” an “endangered species.”
“As someone who never gets scrutinized, I haven't even had to prepare much,” Harry joked at the top of his bit. “But I have been working on this particular act for quite some time. And everyone I know tells me it's perfect. No, these aren't people who just tell me what I want to hear. Oh no.”
Who are they, then? “These are people like my finance manager, my lawyer, and of course, my reiki healer,” he joked.
He also delivered heartfelt messages to fellow veterans and their families.
“I salute each and every one of you, my brothers, my sisters, my friends, through respect, understanding, and admiration,” he said. “And please remember, if any you feel lost or alone with all this going on, don't forget the power of purpose and upholding the important values you know so well. That always gives you the clarity and company you need.”
The evening also featured a surprise performance from Bruce Springsteen, who played five songs and joked, “If at first you don’t succeed, don’t try to skydive.”
A slew of other notables also attended the event, including Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Tracy Morgan.
