Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s comeback plan has backfired on them after a series of controversial public outings at a difficult time for the royal family, according to a source.
Harry attended Hollywood’s Living Legends of Aviation Awards earlier this month but his "weird" behaviour at the glitzy ceremony left his team "holding heads in hands". During the ceremony, Harry made a surprising quip about King Charles considering his health battle.
Meanwhile, Meghan wisely missed the glitzy event as she stayed at home to care for one of their children who had taken ill. Just days later, Meghan joined Harry in Jamaica to attend the premiere of the new Bob Marley film.
The couple raised eyebrows by cosying up to the Jamaican Prime Minister, who wants the country to sever ties with the monarchy. The public appearance came as King Charles received treatment for an enlarged prostate and the Princess of Wales had abdominal surgery.
The couple didn't publicly send well wishes to King Charles or Princess Kate and now it's been reported the Royal Family see Harry and Meghan's public outings as "yet another slap in the face".
“They were already stinging from the criticism Harry got after the Aviation Awards, so she’d hoped this appearance would calm down the negativity," a source close tells Heat magazine. "Instead, they’re being accused of insensitivity and even betrayal, which she believes is vindictive and ridiculous, given that they left the royal family ages ago and have every right to associate with whoever they like. But the view inside the royal family is that this is yet another example of them being tone-deaf."
Harry’s explosive memoir Spare caused major friction between him and his estranged family last year, including his father King Charles, and brother Prince William, and that hasn’t won him any support from royal fans in recent months.
It was reported the couple were planning on reconciling with Harry’s estranged family this year, after Kate Middleton underwent major abdominal surgery and Charles had a prostate procedure, but their relationship is still far from repaired.
