A clash between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton led to Princess Charlotte bursting into tears on Meghan's wedding day, her tailor has revealed.

Ajay Mirpuri was tasked to tailor the bridesmaids' dresses, one of which was for Charlotte, then three, for Meghan's wedding with Prince Harry. None of the six bridesmaid dresses fit properly, it is reported, and this added to Meghan's stress in the run-up to her big day.

She then had an argument with Kate, it is believed, details of which are published in Harry's memoirs Spare. Kate had texted Meghan four days before the wedding to inform her sister-in-law Princess Charlotte's dress was too big, long, and baggy. This led to a tense exchange in which Meghan suggested bringing Charlotte to the tailor, named Ajay, at Kensington Palace for alterations.

However, Kate insisted that all the dresses needed to be remade, it is said. Mr Mirpuri clarified that he had no knowledge of the measurements Givenchy had received but recognised that all six bridesmaids' dresses required adjustments.

The bridesmaids included Florence van Cutsem, Harry's goddaughter; Rylan and Remi Litt, daughters of Meghan's close friends; Ivy Mulroney, daughter of Canadian stylist Jessica Mulroney; and Zalie Warren, another one of Harry's goddaughters.

But Mr Miripuri admitted that he was "not surprised" by the tearful outcome of the fitting ahead of the ceremony in May 2018. Speaking to Daily Mail, the tailor said: "Weddings are stressful at the best of times – especially one at this high level; you've got to respect that. They were faced with a problem like anyone gets at a wedding, with last-minute hitches.

"I can understand why anybody would be upset if the dresses weren't fitting – it's nerve-wracking. I feel for them all because you wouldn't want the children to go out on a big stage in an ill-fitting dress – and that's what they were."
