When the Primetime Emmy nominations were announced on Wednesday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's documentary series was left out of the running, leaving them unhappy with the news according to a royal expert.
"But of course [the couple] will not show it," added Ingrid Seward, royal expert and editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine.
The Netflix series Harry & Meghan aired just three months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in December 2022. The series was the first project within their multi-million dollar deal with Netflix, with rumours of the next documentary to either be about his charity for servicemen, Heart of Invictus, or something that includes Harry returning to Africa.
One of the biggest criticisms of the couple's documentary series was how Meghan and Harry spoke about the royal family.
"In the series, Meghan & Harry talk about the
royal family as if they were the enemy, while they themselves are trying to save the world," says the expert.
Jabs towards the royal family include Harry insinuating that his royal family looked down on his decision to marry Meghan due to her being an American actress, and the prince saying after his mother Diana died he was "brought up by a second family in Africa."
Viewers seemed to want to see the royal family attacked as the series broke a Netflix record for its biggest documentary debut with a total 81.6 million hours watched within the first four days of release. But according to the expert, this "was obviously not good enough for an Emmy nomination."
"The series is an intimate look at 'hardships' they faced in their honey-coloured, rose-tinted world," she said.
It's the latest blow Harry and Meghan have suffered after parting ways with Spotify recently. The duo has been reported to feel 'repeatedly unlucky' after their string of bad luck.
However, the couple did get a win when the series was nominated for the Hollywood Critics Awards in the Best Streaming Nonfiction category.
"Meghan and Harry will concentrate in this and make it a positive, however irritated they might be not to be in the Emmy nominations," our expert said.
Ingrid also offered a few words of advice for the couple: "They are having a run of bad luck in their working life. But ironically as long as they concentrate on delivering personal stuff instead of more serious work, people will be interested."
"They have built a gilded cage of expectation around themselves from which it will be hard to escape."
